Reiki often enters our lives in unexpected ways. For some, the experience begins quietly—a simple introduction, a conversation, or a healing session—and gradually unfolds into something deeply transformative. That was certainly my experience.
My Reiki journey began many years ago while I was participating in a meditation group in Austin, Texas. One of my fellow meditators, Sherry, introduced me to Reiki and shared its many benefits. We discussed how Reiki symbols could be used as a centering practice to help calm the mind and maintain balance in an increasingly fast-paced world. I was immediately drawn to the simplicity, gentleness, and non-invasive nature of the modality.
As our conversations continued, Sherry offered me a Reiki session. I had no idea at the time how profoundly that experience would impact my life.
During the session, I felt deeply relaxed, peaceful, and centered. In the days that followed, I noticed something remarkable: my mind had become quieter. The racing thoughts that often occupied my attention—what we affectionately called the “jumping monkeys” in meditation class—had settled. For the first time in a long while, it felt easier to remain present and focused rather than being pulled away by an endless stream of distractions.
The experience was so powerful that I quickly decided to study Reiki myself.
Soon afterward, I was given the opportunity to train in Reiki Levels One, Two, and Three (Master/Teacher Level) with Denise, a gifted Reiki Master from Wimberley, Texas. She welcomed me into her classes and guided me through the teachings with wisdom and compassion.
At that point in my life, I was navigating a particularly difficult chapter. I felt disconnected, overwhelmed, and far from centered. Learning about the Reiki tradition and the teachings of Dr. Mikao Usui provided a sense of comfort, stability, and purpose. Reiki became more than a healing modality—it became a path of personal growth and self-discovery.
What I did not realize at the time was that this journey would eventually lead me to become a Reiki instructor myself.
After years of practice, I began teaching Reiki and developing educational materials for my students. I researched Reiki extensively while creating course manuals and training programs, deepening both my understanding and appreciation of the practice. This period of study and teaching became a profound chapter of expansion, allowing me to integrate Reiki principles more fully into my daily life.
Through Reiki, I learned to approach life with greater mindfulness, calm, and compassion. The practice encouraged me to cultivate inner stillness, even amid life’s inevitable challenges.
One of the aspects of Reiki that I appreciate most is its versatility. Reiki can be offered as a stand-alone treatment or integrated with many other therapeutic modalities, including Swedish massage, deep tissue therapy, prenatal massage, facial massage, and other bodywork techniques.
Reiki can also be especially meaningful for individuals who may not be comfortable with traditional hands-on therapies. Clients living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), for example, often appreciate Reiki’s gentle approach. Sessions can be performed with a light touch or with the practitioner’s hands hovering a few inches above the body. Similarly, oncology clients may benefit from Reiki’s supportive energetic presence in areas where direct touch would not be appropriate.
Because Reiki is non-invasive and can be performed while clients remain fully clothed, it offers a unique sense of accessibility and comfort. The practice meets people where they are, honoring individual needs while creating space for relaxation, self-awareness, and healing.
As both a practitioner and teacher, I have witnessed the subtle yet profound shifts that Reiki can inspire—not only within myself but also within countless clients and students.
What continues to fascinate me is the contrast between Reiki’s gentle nature and its capacity to facilitate meaningful transformation. The changes may be subtle at first, but over time they often lead to greater peace, clarity, and connection.
For me, Reiki has been a pathway to immeasurable peace. Through consistent practice, study, and service, I have experienced a gradual replacement of chaos with peace, distraction with presence, and uncertainty with trust.
It is a journey that continues to unfold, and one for which I remain deeply grateful.
