Luminous Touch – Facial and Scalp Massage

By Ariana Vincent, LMT, MTI, NCBTMB CE Provider

There are few things more soothing than a wonderful facial and scalp massage. From the very young to the elderly, people of all ages can appreciate the calming, nurturing touch that helps relieve stress, promote relaxation, and create a sense of well-being.

My first experience with professional facial care began more than twenty-five years ago at Barton Creek Resort and Country Club in Austin, Texas, where I started my first spa position. Prior to that, I had specialized primarily in medical massage, so stepping into the world of beauty, skincare, and stress-relief therapies was both exciting and inspiring.

The spa employed several exceptionally talented estheticians who were passionate about continuing their education and exploring new techniques and products. One day, Sean, the spa supervisor, invited the massage therapists to join an esthetics training led by Cassandra Pouget, a representative for Matis Paris, a professional skincare line. That invitation proved to be a pivotal moment in my career.

During the class, Cassandra demonstrated the art of cleansing, toning, exfoliating, masking, misting, hydrating, and protecting the skin with sunscreen. The products were beautifully fragrant, and her touch was gentle, graceful, and deeply soothing. Watching her work sparked a passion within me that continues to burn brightly today. That unexpected opportunity opened the door to incorporating facial massage and skincare products into my private practice.

My education continued through classes and mentorships with several gifted practitioners. I studied facial massage with Maria Candelaria Solis, a massage therapist and instructor whom I worked alongside at Barton Creek. I also trained with Dr. Julia Busching, a naturopathic doctor and esthetician from Germany who taught facial massage and facial acupressure techniques. Later, I had the privilege of studying Ayurvedic facial massage with David Washburn and Mark Nasrallah at the Crossings Wellness Spa in Austin.

While at the Crossings, I was introduced to Ayurvedic scalp massage as part of the ShiroDhara treatment. During this deeply relaxing therapy, warm herbalized organic sesame oil is streamed onto the scalp from a ShiroDhara vessel suspended above the client’s head. The oil is then gently massaged into the hair and scalp, creating a profound sense of relaxation and renewal.

I loved offering ShiroDhara treatments so much that I became affectionately known as the “ShiroDhara Queen” at the Crossings. Years after the spa closed, I continued sharing these techniques by incorporating Ayurvedic massage practices into the continuing education courses offered through the Ariana Institute for Wellness Education.

My passion for scalp massage extended beyond my own practice. While working at another spa in Austin, I was invited to teach fellow therapists and estheticians effective scalp massage techniques.

As my training and experience expanded, I began developing a continuing education course on facial and scalp massage specifically for massage therapists.

Hundreds of students have completed my facial and scalp massage courses, and countless clients have experienced these treatments in my private practice. Watching therapists expand their skills and seeing clients relax into comfort and renewal has been one of the greatest rewards of my career.

I remain deeply grateful for the day the gates opened to this beautiful intersection of health, beauty, stress reduction, and nurturing touch. I am thankful for every teacher who guided me, every client who trusted me, every colleague who encouraged me, and every student who embraced the opportunity to learn.

Facial and scalp massage have brought immeasurable joy to my life. I love the feeling of luminous, healthy skin, and even more, I cherish the opportunity to help others experience that same sense of radiance, relaxation, and inner glow.
