Adventures in Chair Massage

By Ariana Vincent, LMT, MTI, NCBTMB CE Provider

One of the most rewarding aspects of my massage therapy career has been the opportunity to offer chair massage in a wide variety of settings. Over the years, chair massage has taken me on some truly memorable adventures and introduced me to people and places I might never have encountered otherwise.

I’ve provided chair massage in the grand ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel, where I had the pleasure of working with the ladies of the Texas legislature. I’ve worked in a charming bed-and-breakfast nestled in the Texas Hill Country, where the massage room was decorated floor-to-ceiling with an enchanting Alice in Wonderland theme. I’ve also participated in community events, including a benefit for Latina mothers held in the garden of a beautiful East Austin plant nursery, where I massaged clients surrounded by blooming roses and vibrant hibiscus flowers.

Of course, chair massage has also brought me into more traditional environments, including technology companies, schools, medical offices, wellness fairs, and corporate wellness programs. Throughout these experiences, I’ve served in many roles—sometimes as a contract therapist and other times as a team leader and event organizer. Each opportunity has enriched my professional journey and allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life.

My passion for teaching chair massage began with a simple act of encouragement. A close friend once contacted me because she had been offered a chair massage opportunity backstage at the historic Paramount Theatre, working with a group of musicians she deeply admired. Although she was highly skilled in several massage modalities, she lacked confidence in her chair massage techniques and considered turning down the opportunity.

I could have easily accepted the assignment myself, but instead I wanted to empower her. I gathered a group of experienced chair massage therapists, and together we created an informal training session. We exchanged chair massage treatments, developed a practical protocol, and provided support and guidance until she felt comfortable and confident. When the day of the event arrived, she embraced the opportunity, had an incredible experience, and thoroughly enjoyed working with the musicians she admired. We all celebrated her success.

That experience planted a seed.

Not long afterward, I began developing a nationally approved continuing education course focused on chair massage. To ensure students had access to quality equipment, I invested in several Earthlite Portal Pro massage chairs so participants wouldn’t need to bring their own. I created a comprehensive course manual covering techniques, protocols, anatomy, body mechanics, contraindications, and marketing strategies.

From the very beginning, the class became one of my most popular continuing education offerings—and it remains so today.

What I enjoy most is watching students build confidence, refine their skills, and discover new professional opportunities. Whenever chair massage assignments become available, I often reach out to my standout students first, connecting them with opportunities to work alongside me or independently, depending on the needs of the event.

Chair massage can be an exceptional gateway to building a massage practice. It allows therapists to showcase their skills, connect with potential clients, and create valuable professional relationships. At the same time, it can be a highly profitable service in its own right.

Looking back, chair massage has opened countless doors for me. It has led me into elegant ballrooms, beautiful gardens, historic theaters, and bustling corporate offices. More importantly, it has introduced me to extraordinary people and created opportunities to teach, mentor, and serve others. For massage therapists seeking flexibility, visibility, and meaningful connections, chair massage can be a truly remarkable path.
